The well-known local award-winning cabinet maker now boasts an expanded team of qualified interior designers and project management experts, specialising in kitchens, bathrooms and whole house interior spaces. With Registered Builder oversight, the team provides comprehensive design-led guidance from concept design through to completed renovation or new home cabinetry.

What you need to know about ENGINEERED STONE

On the 13 December 2023 Ministers announced a ban on the use, supply, and manufacture of engineered stone from 1 July 2024.

However, until the ban comes into effect, as per the advice of Safe Work Australia, workers and businesses can continue to work with engineered stone in a controlled way in accordance with WHS regulations.

An expanding variety of alternative benchtop products are entering the market, offering a wider range of options. The clients are busy professionals, made even busier with a pair of on-the-go teenage boys. They love to entertain, as well as nestle home in solitude.

They self-describe their home and kitchen as “coastal industrial noir”, along with their meticulously placed healthy flowing house plants, providing an immediate feeling of warmth, home, nature and wellbeing. Together, the designer and clients created a cutting-edge, modern, industrial style to blend with the existing black and timber floor, furniture and decorative flair of the home.

Dan Bruce is a multi-award (HIA) winning, 2nd generation designer and cabinet maker. With over 20 years experience, Dan has a Cert. III in Building/Construction and Carpentry/Joinery and Cert. IV in Design of Kitchens, Bathrooms and Interior Spaces. Dan is a Registered Building Practitioner with the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) (DB-L 64755, CDB-L 66067). He is also an accredited HIA GreenSmart Kitchen & Bathroom Professional. Dan is responsible for client liaison, design, quoting and project management. He has a deep passion for design and the vision to see entire projects completed in full detail.

And you will see the undoubtable impeccable quality of craftsmanship and detail. The client’s vision was expertly interpreted with black, white, concrete and timber components carefully intertwined for a polished and chic design. The crisp Unique Calacatta Essastone island purposefully blends with the white walls and high ceiling, making the room look composed with neat and clean lines. The concrete benchtops are extended up the textured masonry tile backsplash, creating a clean and industrial look, further accented with low-hanging industrial style pendants. The space is high in design complexity with the added advantage of modern ergonomics, proving that industrial style does not need vintage elements to work.

Natural Light Meets Asymmetrical Balance & Contrast

Creating Light in a Dark Palette

The dark black style feels bold and contemporary, highlighted by the floor-to-ceiling black accent wall, in Haymes Chimney Ash, which adds personality. A challenge to overcome was ensuring ample natural light when working with a dark palette. Here, the large skylight funnels sunlight into the kitchen to stop the space feeling closed in and oppressive. The high slanted ceiling makes the kitchen feel big and bright, turning the ceiling into a unique feature. In addition, the wooden cabinetry section adds a light and warm aspect to the room, holding up delicate houseplant greenery. Further, the copper pull handles against the traceless Matt Black cabinetry and distinct black pull handles against the timber grain cabinetry adds contrast that draws the eyes into the purposeful details of the intermixed design.

Careful Combination of Elements & Principles of Design

The kitchen’s timber grain Honey Elm laminate cabinets are a pleasant contrast and meticulously blended throughout the sophisticated traceless Matt Black ‘Noir’ palette, while the raw concrete elements and factory style lighting add an industrial tone.

Hidden Storage Solutions

The butler’s pantry is so well hidden, even our professional photographer forgot to photograph it! The butler’s pantry full kitchen sink and dishwasher allows for easy use and concealed clean-up. Even so, movement from the main kitchen space to the hidden butler’s pantry. This classic butler’s pantry proves a timeless smart and creative storage solution, essential for keeping kitchen clutter at bay.

ONE SPACE, MANY OPTIONS

Customised for a Busy Lifestyle and Entertaining

The multifunctional large island offers ample bench space as a place to serve and eat food, doubling as a great laptop space for after-hours work, truly making the kitchen the power centre of the home. As crowds tend to congregate in the kitchen, the challenge was to create a multifunctional space for the clients’ busy lifestyle and hosting guests. Designed with intention for entertaining, the innovative addition of seating to both sides of the island means the host is not left standing the entire night.

Zones Designed for Multi-tasking

Functional floor plan to accommodate a multitude of tasks including cooking, preparation, entertaining, dining, after hours work and other lifestyle needs.

Strategic location of an island bar sink, butler’s pantry kitchen sink, wall ovens, stove and fridge allowed for careful planning and placement of functional storage and work zones, providing a place for everything.

Workspaces are creatively defined by contrasting benchtops and cabinetry colours, adding major drama, differentiating the kitchen zones in this open floor plan, adding sophistication and warmth to the space.

Features include undermount sinks, pull-out bin, concealed rangehood, Blum Legrabox 40kg soft close drawers and integrated island dish drawer.

LEONGATHA KITCHENS WINS DESIGN AWARD & CELEBRATES 40-YEARS IN BUSINESS

Leongatha, Victoria: Leongatha Kitchens & Bathrooms multi-award-winning cabinetmaker and designer, Dan Bruce, has today announced that they have been named as award winners in the Kitchen Design category in the 2020 Housing Industry Association (HIA) Eastern Victoria Regional Housing, Kitchen & Bathroom Awards.

The awards were held in on online ceremony on 3 December. The judging criteria emphasises quality of workmanship, design appearance and innovation, technical compliance and presentation drawings and specifications.

Established in 1980, Leongatha Kitchens & Bathrooms (formerly Don Bruce Kitchens) are a family-owned and operated professional design and custom cabinet making company, collaborating with local clients and builders.

“This win is certainly the perfect highpoint of our 40-year anniversary celebrations this year,” shared Carrie Bruce, Leongatha Kitchens Business Manager. “It goes without saying that the past year has been one-of-a-kind. We have truly been humbled by support from our community during COVID-19 and the increased interest in renovations and new home projects. We are proud to be recognized to have reached the pinnacle of building standards demonstrated in these quality homes.”

Melbourne, Victoria: VerdeLife, this week announced multi-award-winning cabinetmaker and designer, Dan Bruce, has been named as a finalist for the 2020 Housing Industry Association (HIA) GreenSmart Awards in the Professional category. VerdeLife is on a mission to influence the cabinetry industry with their sustainable, and innovatively designed outdoor kitchens.

“It is an absolute honour to have been named a finalist for an award of this calibre, at a national level. VerdeLife’s SustainaPod is breaking new ground in functional conscious design, combining both environmentally preferable products and sustainable building practices. In 2019, their scope expanded from retail suppliers to also include trade suppliers, including residential builders, buying groups, architects, cabinet makers and landscape designers, providing an eco-responsible all-in-one alfresco solution. They are Australia’s first Official Licensee – Australian Made & Owned, and accomplished their goal of ongoingly offsetting 100% of their carbon emissions in partnership with Greenfleet Australia, through the regeneration of Australian forests.

“This finalist nomination affirms our mission to make environmental considerations standard in our business, projects and products,” says Dan, owner and designer at VerdeLife. “It sends a strong message to us, and our industry that sustainable practice is being recognised, and that’s not only motivating, but inspirational.”

HIA's Australian GreenSmart Awards recognise the diligent efforts of environmentally-aware residential builders, designers and manufacturers. The awards recognise those who build or design environmentally-friendly homes, provide solutions to make homes more efficient or create new products for the building industry.

Dan is best known throughout his local region of South Gippsland and Bass Coast, Victoria, as the owner and lead designer at Leongatha Kitchens & Bathrooms (formerly Don Bruce Kitchens), an Australian family-owned and operated professional design and custom cabinet making company, with over 40 years of experience collaborating with local clients and builders.

In 2015, Dan obtained his certification as a HIA GreenSmart Kitchen & Bathroom professional and returned to work inspired with an idea to provide premium quality, sustainable cabinetry. As a result, he embarked on a journey that would become VerdeLife, innovating alfresco living with my SustainaPod Outdoor Kitchen Range. The SustainaPod concept is sustainable, pre-assembled, modular cabinetry that is easy to install in just a few steps. In product partnership with Weber Barbecues Australia New Zealand, Laminex, Blum and Lithofin, SustainaPod launched in Victoria in 2016, before becoming a nationwide product the following year in July 2017. They design, manufacture and sell the product nationwide to retail and trade suppliers.

Through the years, Dan has also won several HIA awards for kitchen design and construction, including winner of the inaugural HIA Outdoor Kitchen of the Year in 2012, and again in 2013.

The HIA GreenSmart Awards are held in the highest regards within the Victorian and Australian residential construction industry. Finalists are making a positive difference to the environment. Leading by example, they are inspiring other HIA members to build sustainable, energy efficient and comfortable homes for their clients.

How Much Does It Cost to Build a New Kitchen, Outdoor Kitchen or Bathroom?

How much does it cost to build a new kitchen, outdoor kitchen or bathroom? It depends! Many factors go into pricing; an accurate quotation requires detailed designs, specifications and plans.

Kitchens

Like all projects, the cost of a kitchen varies by scope. A finishes-only project on one end of the spectrum to a full-gut, moving-walls transformation on the other. A consultation and plan from one of our designers is necessary in order to provide the most accurate quote.

Outdoor Kitchens

The cost of building an outdoor kitchen is as diverse as the types of alfresco living available. Size, finish selection and site are all factors that affect cost. Plans from one of our designers are necessary in order to provide the most accurate quote.

Bathrooms

Like all projects, the cost of a bathroom remodel varies by scope. Cost will differ by size and type of project – a powder room versus master ensuite, for example. Factors like finish choices, current plumbing configuration and range of ‘extras’ (think heated floors, added skylights, soaking tubs) also contribute to the pricing of a project.

We design a preliminary computerised custom floor plan.

Many people know Leongatha Kitchens & Bathrooms as their local award-winning cabinet maker. Right from the beginning there was something different about Leongatha Kitchens & Bathrooms, formerly Don Bruce Kitchens. The year was 1980 when Don and Sheryl Bruce set up on their farm in Leongatha North. They had a fundamental insight – the needs of their customers matched with a thorough knowledge of design and materials. This insight has been our backbone for over 40 years, and we have built our reputation on exceptional customer service and the ability to meet clients’ needs with cabinetry manufactured to the highest standards using the best materials available.

Today, this approach persists with the next generation of excellence, Don’s son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Carrie. In 2011, Dan and Carrie took the helm, representing the second generation of the Bruce family to manage the company. Dan began his apprenticeship in cabinet making in 1997 and helped move the company into the industrial estate in Leongatha 20 years ago. Dan is a Register Builder with the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) (DB-L 64755), Gold Member of the Housing Industry Association (HIA), accredited Designer with KBDi (Kitchen and Bathroom Designers Institute Australia) and a qualified cabinet maker with over 20 years’ experience. Dan also brings international expertise with him as he spent over five years in the USA managing a kitchen and building company.

We remain true to our core values of innovation, reliability, quality and customer care. Dan has carried on Don’s professional approach in the business with a focus on continued training and quality service. We continue to provide a superior product at a competitive price.

We offer clients a complete package from professional design through to installation. Our designers offer the latest in custom computerised 3D design along with personalised colour consultations. We also work with, and refine, architect, interior or draft designs.

Our computerised 3D design program allows our clients to visualize their project before it is built. We work closely with our clients to create a design that suits their needs, style and budget. Having knowledge of the latest materials and hardware is essential to be able to meet the client’s needs and provide a spectrum of styles.

Our “small but mighty” showroom and display centre is adjacent to our state-of-the-art workshop, located in the industrial estate, which allows us to manufacture locally-made and in-house cabinetry, handcrafted by fully qualified and apprentice cabinet makers. The slick and upmarket showroom displays the latest range of products and designs from simple to extremely intricate and technical, including a wide range of industry brands such as Laminex, Polytec, Hafele, Blum and Smeg home appliances. A selection of handles, doors and backsplashes – including glass and Laminex Metaline – are also on display; as is a range of laminate and stone benchtops, including Caesarstone, Essastone and Quantum Quartz.

We really can provide a style for anyone. Some people come to the showroom and say, ‘I want this exactly!’, so designs are then tailored to fit the space, size and budget of an individual room. We can provide traditional and specialty designs, right through to contemporary styles.

We work throughout the entire Gippsland and Bass Coast regions.
